The ensuing gestures are poignantly and vulnerably expressed, each person isolated in a moment of quiet reflection. The grouped subjects are simultaneously aware and unconscious of each other, floating in a dialectic space between presence and memory. The group of women and the group of men rest beside each other in sightless yet sensual contemplation, each group framing an empty center. A Hirsute Affair garners its name from hirsutism, a medical condition found in women who grow excessive amounts of hair, often in places where hair does not normally grow. At the heart of the exhibition were the myriad cultural meanings and representations of hair. From gender, race, and identity politics to memory, metaphor, and pop culture, hair holds powerful personal and political connotations alike. A Hirsute Affair brought together innovative work in all media addressing issues and images fiercely entangled with hair. The series uses figure and gesture as metaphor, looking to art history to provide a framework for examining modern concepts. The goal was to create carefully choreographed moments composed of ordinary characters in mundane surroundings to reveal each figure as possessing numerous layers of meaning and interpretation, and to endow each of these revelations with subtlety, vulnerability, quiet suspense, as well as the idea that below the pristine surface, something is about to rupture. Parables was shot with a 4" x 5" view camera on Fujichrome 64T Type II Professional. forests and pine trees. The title derives from Walter Benjamin’s essay “The Task of the Translator,” in which he describes translation as shooting arrows into the heart of a forest to find the echo of the original text. I am transposing his metaphoric image onto the relationship between representation and referent while retaining echoes of fairytales and mysticism. Wood and pine trees are construction materials and are represented in images and models. The installation involves a deferral or displacement of the original, or perhaps original copies; they are a mixture of the present fake and the absent or constructed referent, forming larger compositions from multiple, similar parts: difference in repetition, sameness in multiplicity, the forest and its copies.
